</tr>
<tr>
	<td>
 <p> Louisa May Alcott pulled her entire family out of dire poverty with the success of her book "Little Women," a largely autobiographical work. She had served a long apprenticeship before fame overtook her with the success of that great domestic novel.

All during the previous decade, Alcott spent her time establishing herself as a reliable writer for the eastern magazines. She wrote in two genres and used the pen name, A.M. Barnard. She manifested two personas.

As Louisa May Alcott, she wrote for a domestic audience about the virtues of clean living and family life. Young women overcame many obstacles of poverty and low birth through self-reliant virtues of courage and charm to be rewarded with happiness and love in the end.

As A.M. Barnard, Alcott engaged in the recreation of writing "thrillers" that usually featured several tormented characters. The important characters achieved redemption through repentance, and the bad characters usually died broken-hearted and miserable.

Naturall, over time, the stories written under the pen name were lost as Alcott achieved freat success with a series of books such as "Little Men," "Jo's Boys," "Rose in Bloom," "Under the Lilacs," and many others. She was America's most successful female author of the nineteenth century.

Beginning in the late 1970s and extending into the 1990s, famed Alcott biographer, Madeline B. Stern began to discover the old, "missing" Alcott stories. No individual stories were highlighted in her collections except for the forgotten and unpublished novel, "The Long, Fatal Love Chase." When that thriller was published in the 1990s, it became a New York Times bestseller.

Now Elm Hill Books is highlighting Alcott's timeless abilities as a storyteller by bringing out "The Abbot's Ghost" and "The Baron's Gloves," books sure to please Alcott's many fans. It will be a side of Alcott new to them but definitely entertaining all the same.

~from the inside flap. The Abbot's Ghost-- a romantic thriller!

Maurice Treherne is wrongly accused of fraud and gambling and must play a careful hand if he is to win his love, Octavia, and retain the trust of those who had faith in him. Treherne is temporarily crippled saving the life of his well-born friend, Jaspar. Thus, Jaspar is assured of inheriting his father's estate, but it is expected that Treherne will inherit great wealth as gratitude for saving the heir. But on the death of Jaspar's father, all are shocked to learn that Treherne has...
